Sustainability workshops for primary and secondary schools
Empower your young people to take and lead action in their schools and communities to build a more sustainable future for all
Our sustainability workshops for primary and secondary schools are a collaboration between The Harmony Project and SEEd, two leading organisations in the field of sustainability education with over 17 years of experience in facilitating transformative change. These events offer a unique opportunity to bring young people together with local partner organisations to explore sustainability in the context of their schools and to equip them with the skills and understanding to become leaders in sustainability.
Designed to empower students to engage with issues of sustainability in their schools, lives and communities, these workshops aren’t only beneficial for the students; they can support your school in taking the initial steps towards implementing a Climate Action Plan and continuing on their sustainability journeys.
“A very informative day! They all loved looking at energy data and how it could help at school.”
– Primary school teacher and science lead
Sustainability workshops for primary schools
Led by The Harmony Project, the primary school sustainability workshop engages students through interactive sessions, exploring issues such as:
– Monitoring energy use in schools and setting targets to reduce it
– Thinking about the food we eat, the systems that produce it and how much we throw away
– Exploring ways to enhance biodiversity in our local area
– Learning how to recreate the beautiful geometric patterns in nature
At the end of the day, children work together to draft Climate Action Plans to take back to their schools, engaging both staff and students. The event is filled with practical activities including analysing packed lunches through the lens of sustainability to help children think about their daily food choices and consider their environmental impact. The combination of indoor and outdoor activities helps students gain hands-on experience, strengthening their commitment to environmental stewardship. Following the event, educators and leadership teams are welcome to use our Harmony curriculum resources and to work further with us on putting sustainability at the heart of the school.
“My most enjoyable part of the day was drawing leaves and apple shapes.”
– Year 5 student
Sustainability workshops for secondary schools
Led by SEEd, the secondary school sustainability workshop moves students from awareness to action, with workshops and sessions focused on practical sustainability initiatives. Students work alongside local businesses, charities and community organisations to think about impactful action.
Key activities include exploring local climate initiatives, developing an understanding that their voice and concerns matter and developing action plans for their schools.
Students can work on projects to reduce their school’s carbon footprint and make a tangible difference in their communities, building sustainability skills for the future. By the end of the day, students leave with clear, actionable plans and a pathway to develop sustainability competences through SEEd’s Young Changemaker programme, should they choose to do so.
“The sustainability workshop deepened my understanding of how we can all contribute to a more sustainable future. The speakers empowered me to believe that, collaboratively, we can make large-scale impact.”
– Eshika, SEEd sustainability workshop youth participant
About the sustainability workshops
We recommend holding the sustainability workshops in the autumn or spring terms so that the goals can be developed into plans that are rolled out earlier in the academic year.
A tailored package of funding would cover essential costs incurred by SEEd and The Harmony Project for the two-day joint event, including staff time, materials, delivery, preparation and transport costs. Where a local authority, MAT, school or youth group cannot provide a suitable venue with easy outdoor access, a suitable venue will need to be sourced at an additional cost.
A virtual training webinar for participating staff members is held two weeks after the event, led by The Harmony Project or SEEd.
Each sustainability workshop can reach over a hundred young people and tens of schools, creating an impact throughout your community.
